Translation:
The Record of Yueyang Tower

I worry for the world's troubles before the world worries, and delight in the world's joys after the world delights.
To love the people and cherish all things is the greatest virtue. Only when one is dedicated to the utmost public good can one share the world's worries and delights.
To bear the burden of worldly disdain is the most severe trial. Only when one bears the burden of worldly disdain can one share in the world's worries and delights.
Only when worries and delights are calm and natural can one enjoy honors bestowed by heaven. It is only through inner peace and balance between worries and delights that one may be blessed with honors from heaven. Ascending to the top of Yueyang Tower, one wishes to share the worries and delights of others.
I worry for the world's troubles before the world worries, and delight in the world's joys after the world delights. Who can bear it with sorrow?
To be kind, one must be kind to one's family first. To be kind to one's family, one must first govern the state. To govern the state, one must first bring order to one's family. To bring order to one's family, one must first cultivate oneself. To cultivate oneself, one must first rectify the mind. To rectify the mind, one must first embody sincerity of intention. To embrace sincerity of intention, one must first reach the ultimate knowledge, and ultimate knowledge lies in the investigation of things. The investigation of things precedes knowledge, knowledge precedes sincere intention, sincere intention precedes rectified mind, rectified mind precedes cultivated self, cultivated self precedes unified family, unified family precedes governed state, and the governed state leads to peace under heaven.
Heavenly spirits are selfproduced; they come from heaven. The weight of gold and jade, the speed of a good horse. Although engaged in bustling activities, it is not for personal gain, but to worry about the lives of others. When all things are nurtured, none are lost.
In "The Record of Yueyang Tower," Fan Zhongyan expresses his contemplation on the balance of sorrows and joys in life, the principles of benevolence and righteousness, and the governance of the state, family, and self.
