Eastward flows the great river,

In Heaven there are twelve months,

Upon earth but one Spring.

With whom shall we share the joy of Spring?

The Palace is built of shining jade,

Its pillars exceptional in beauty;

Each day nine phoenixes descend,

Spreading fragrance of rarest quality.

The Emperor dreams of his love,

And would risk his throne to keep it.

But the gods are inscrutable,

The Emperor is powerless.

Sweet is the beauty of those spring days,

But who can describe its bitterness?

The face I see in my dreams

Is naturally the face of Chang Hen Ge.

She was of wondrous grace,

And utterly beyond comparison.

Majestic and full of energy,

Versatile and most intelligent.

Her song could move heaven and earth,

And her beauty would still shine through,

Even if the skies should crumble and fall.

The Emperor would give up his throne,

His will to live would follow,

If only he could make her stay,

If only he could achieve his ends.

But Chang Hen Ge has left this world,

And so the Emperor now regrets.

For a moment in her arms,

He would gladly endure all the suffering of ten thousand deaths.

All things pass away like a dream,

And Youth and Beauty are all too fleeting.

The Dragon Pool at Golden Mountain,

Is drained and lies in ruins.

Green moss covers the Imperial Park,

And the White Jade Terrace is filled with weeds.

And so I remember those bygone days,

Those memories of youth long vanished.

Our flowerlike faces have faded,

Our blueblack hair has turned white.

We wave farewell to the rim of the earth,

Gathering together the fragments of our lives.

But even though these brief moments have passed,

Our love is still everlasting and strong.
