Teng Wengong asked: "The sacred way of the Master is such as to permit of being described, known, put in practice, and investigated with discrimination. What do you mean by calling it the 'Tzŭch'i'?"

Tseng Tzu replied: "The words of the holy man admit of being described and known; they admit of being acted upon with reverence, and can be subjected to examination and discrimination; thus far they go, and that is all.

Teng Wengong further asked: "But what do you mean by calling it the 'Tzŭch'i'?"

Tseng Tzu replied: "The way of the Master is on a par with the dimensions of heaven and earth, and embraces spirits and gods. Therefore it can be described and known, put in practice with reverence, and submitted to examination and discrimination. This is the meaning of 'Tzŭch'i'."

Teng Wengong said: "Then permit me to hear it."

Tseng Tzu replied: "If the government be not disturbed, then people's virtue will not come to a halt; how much less will it come to a halt in the case of those who are followers of the way."
